My Pitch

Throughout Little Brother we have continued feel of antipathy towards Charles. He is everything that is wrong with society and he clumsily gets in the way of Marcus, our story’s hero. Charles is totally conditioned by society and doesn’t have a challenging thought in his head. He is the perfect student for indoctrination, but how did he get this way. We automatically dislike Charles but in reality we don’t know anything about him. First of all, where was while Marcus was in prison? Was he sitting at home watching television enjoying some dessert, or was he in the cell next to Marcus?

I will remix Little Brother by following Charles during the time Marcus was imprisoned, and I won’t have to go far because Charles is only a couple of cells down. Charles was picked up shortly before Marcus was and is continually tortured in Gitmo by the Bay. Charles is defiant in his interrogation and displays characteristics we have never seen of him. Severe haircut lady continually explains to Charles that he is not allowed to leave he believes that he is safe. She says that as of now he isn’t safe but believes he is, and that he can’t leave until he truly knows that he is safe. Charles tries lying and telling her knows what she is saying but she doesn’t buy it. Charles finally gets frustrated and directly challenges severe haircut lady. This doesn’t go over well. Charles is dragged back to his cell.

Over the next couple of days Charles is heavily tortured and is broken down. He isn’t tortured for information or because he is thought to be involved in the attack, he is tortured only because he doesn’t know that he is safe. Charles is finally taken back for his final interrogation. He is broken and done. He finally believes that he is safe.

I end the remix with Charles back in the classroom arguing with Marcus. Marcus says something that severe haircut lady says to Charles and this reminds us of how he was conditioned to believe what he does.
