My final hypertext will expose the low wage job of an immigrant dock boy in a city of Miami marina. Miami being a major port city in the United States has many marinas and boating clubs, with these different forms of docking and fueling come the need of manual labor. This presents opportunity for immigrant workers to find employment, although little do they know what type of tasks this employment entails. The majority of dockworkers are paid close to minimum wage and are treated as maintenance, janitorial, and general labor workers. They are expected to perform whatever is asked of them, while under the incredible heat and humidity of Miami weather.
These underpaid worker have the same work conditions as any other construction or out doors profession, but because of lack of employment, they are too scared to take advantage of the benefits given to those of a similar position with more stability. This is also due to their lack of experience being in a country where common workers have rights, most of these immigrants are used to working in worse conditions back home and believe being over worked is fine. While in reality they should have better hours, shaded area to rest in between tasks, and better pay.
Immigrants are being exploited for their fear of unemployment and lack of knowledge in workers rights. This website will go into how they are mistreated and how their exploitation helps dock owners make more money, and always have replacement workers. I will go into the conditions they work in, and all the right they should be allowed, as well as state the importance of these dockworkers. These men/women rely on these jobs for themselves and/or families, they should not have to be mistreated or wronged to keep their lives stable.
