The focus of my low wage hypertext will be on nannies. This is a very common occupation for transient workers, especially part-time college students, so people tend to think of these positions as transient jobs or simple stepping stones. In reality, however, many people in this position remain working in childcare positions like this their entire lives, earning wages of approximately $20,000 - $30,000 annually. While nannies generally earn more than minimum wage, around $10 per hour on average, their salaries are disproportionate to the amount of work they do, and many employers expect more of nannies than required by the job description. Most nannies are responsible for duties like basic childcare, cooking, and cleaning the used cookware and children’s areas. However, many employers also expect their nannies to vacuum and clean other areas of the house, do laundry, and perform other, heavier housework which their contract generally does not require.
Because their wages are low, especially with respect to the amount of work done, many nannies struggle with making ends meet in their personal lives. Often, nannies are young, part-time college students who are working around their classes in order to pay their tuition. In order to balance their academics, social life, and job, many of these students cut back on the number of classes they take in order to reduce expenses and, in so doing, lessen their chances of finding a more traditional job in the short term. In essence, nannies are one of the most common low-wage jobs, and while some may write it off as a transient position or an easy job, many nannies are overworked and underpaid, struggling to make ends meet on their meager salaries.
