SOBER-ATO? OR ALCATRAZ?

Setting : Some prestigious private college campus/Little Brother University

Character: Residents of college and certain administration

Scene setting: Deans office Mid- meeting as he congratulates campus safety for having a great first two quarters.

Assistant to the dean of Little Brother University: sorry sir, I know you didn’t want to be disturbed during your meeting today, but I think their may be something on the news you might want to see...

Dean: What is it; I don’t have time to be watching TV right now.

AD: It’s the students, they are on the news.

D: Our students? Show me.

They walk to the TV in the office.

New woman: Here we are at Little brother university, a Private Institute of higher learning, where students are protesting the invasion of privacy being practiced in their dorm buildings. Here is an animated video, made by the students, to show the abuse of power, and how the university is taking advantage of its rights.

Scene: Friday night 9 pm on campus. S4 walking home from the library with a backpack on.

CS: Excuse me sir; may I see your access card?

S4: ya sure, I go to school here I just live off campus.

Cs: So what’s in the backpack?

S4: Just my books I was in the library.

CS: I’m going to need to search your bag to make sure you aren’t smuggling illicit material onto campus cause you’re under 21.

S4: I was in the library, you have no reason to search me.

CS: You are a college student with a backpack on at 9 pm on a Friday. That’s all the reason I need to believe you are carrying alcohol.

S4: That’s ridiculous, even if I did have alcohol, that can’t be enough cause to search me.

CS: I don’t care what you think. You don’t have the right to deny me, so hand over the bag.

S4: This is bull shit, Here look for yourself.

CS searches bag and throws everything on the floor(books, calculator, pens, pencils, etc.). He finds nothing and returns the bag

CS: Have a good night.

S4: You aren’t going to clean this up?!

CS just walks away.

Everyone is chilling is sober-ato lounge 204 Listening to music chit chatting and having a good time (no alcohol.)

S1: Nick whats up bro??

S2: chillin man, just a lot of work for Monday, that CTW class is busting my…

Knock on the door.

S3 opens the door

(CF) is standing outside the door

CF: We are hearing a lot of boisterous laughter and loud noises coming from this room, and there are rumors there might be alcohol here (lie cause no body would care to spread that rumor)

S3: No mam, just my friends hanging out in my suite.

CF: we’re going to have to search your suite.

S3: that’s not fair, you have no reasonable cause.

CF: we don’t need reasonable cause, we just need to believe there is alcohol.

CF begins to search the room while everyone boos her.

She enter S4’s room and begins to search the room.

She finds sex paraphernalia in his room along with multiple blow up dolls…

She proceeds to do the same will all rooms embarrassing the owners with what she finds.

She ends her search in vain there was no alcohol, or any other contraband.

S3: I told you! You had no right to do this. This is wrong and is a complete invasion of privacy!!!

CF: I’m sorry but we have the right to do this and if you refuse the search campus safety with ransack your room…

S3: this is wrong and we need to do something about it.

New scene

CF is searching though rooms 204 trash in the dumpster to find alcohol.

S3 walks in to throw out more trash.

S3: what are you doing? Why do you have our trash?

CF: well S3 we mark your trash bags just in case there is suspicion of alcohol or drugs in the building, so we can search it.

S3: isn’t that illegal or something?

CF: no, when you signed to go to this school, because it is a private institute, not owned by the state, we are able to rid you of all your rights as long as you sign for it. So you get to do whatever I say.

S3: so no matter what if I want to attend LBU I lose my civil rights as a citizen of the US?

CF: Somewhat ya.

S3: that’s fucked up and completely immoral.

And btw there’s nothing illegal or against the rules in any of our trash, so you can get out of the dumpsters now dumbass.

New scene

Student walks towards sober-ato from Safeway with a backpack.

Campus safety is waiting by the door of sober-ato

CS: What’s in the bag there little lady? Bought some alcohol in safeway? Are you 21?

S1: No officer, I just had to get groceries and I didn’t want to harm the environment by taking a plastic bag.

CS: I’m going to have to search your bag.

S1: no, screw that, I’m telling the truth.

CS: you don’t have a choice; you have to do as I say.

CS grabs bag

S1: Don’t touch my fucking bag

S1 opens the bag to reveal tampons and a pack of condoms…

CS: Oh…. I apologize; you can be on your way now.

S1: It’s not my fault LBU is Jesuit and doesn’t provide birth control or contraceptives to its students. Screw you

S1 walks inside.

Quick cut to dean (animated)

Dean has a flash back to a conversation he had with a parent inside his office.

(real/animated?)

D: I’m sorry to hear about your daughter Mr. Father, but it is not the responsibility of the university to supply contraceptives to the students. We are a Jesuit university and have to keep our morals and beliefs.

Father: I don’t give a shit whether or not you supply them; my problem is harassing the students to the extent that they are cautious to buy it themselves, for fear of being searched. My daughter was a smart girl she knew to always protect herself. Your campus safety is the responsible party for making my child too uncomfortable to buy her own contraceptives.

D: Our campus safety does everything in order to protect the students; because of campus safety there is less drug use and violent incidents on campus. Your daughter should have used a condom, which is all.

Father stands up

Father: I’m a good catholic father whom keeps to his faith, and my daughter was also a good catholic. The fact that she is now pregnant and will probably end up having an abortion is only because of your abuse of power. So I hope you understand that you have condemned a good catholic family to a terrible fucking fate.

Father walks out

D: The girl should have been smarter and used protection.

Flash back ends

He blurrs back to real life

D: Fuck, what are we doing to these kids…

Scene cut now a quick message from the students

S3: As you can see the conditions we live in are unacceptable and need to be corrected. There have been many repercussions to this invasive form of monitoring, lives have been deeply affected and peoples emotions have been played with. All in all, we just want to reach the administration with this, in hope of change.

(Animation) News lady: Thank you S3

As you can see the conditions of these students is ridiculous and they need to do something about it, hopefully this school will understand their plea and reason with their students. This video has also been posted to youtube and with the more attention it receives, the chance of their situation being corrected increases. Here is a picture of their page and a few comments other kids have written. So once again please help them in their cause.

Cut to Dean in his office.

D: I can’t believe this, is this what I was congratulating?

Dean walks back into the meeting room with campus safety

D: I have just seen a video that so called depicts your actions with the students. The only thing I can say is there better be no validity to these stories because if there is, there will be a change in this staff.

CS: The students are just mad because they keep getting caught.

D: from what I saw you guys harass more people than you actually catch. I can assure you there will be an investigation to see how true this video is. This school has just been tainted on national television; we will make amends for this. I will make amends for this.

Dean walks over to the phone and asks his assistant to connect him with Mr. Father.
